<p> Facts About Stress and The Immune System</p>
<p> 1. Stress has a direct effect on our immune systems.</p>
<p> 2. The acute stressors evoke our &quot;fight or flight&quot; response, and our immune system prepares itself for defense. The stressors force chemicals also into our system that boost the power of our immune systems.</p>
<p> 3. Those long-term chronic stressors are the killer stressors, and reduce and gradually destroy the effectiveness of our immune systems.</p>
<p> 4. The ill or elderly will be more effected by stress than the well or young person, with usually very negative effects.</p>
<p> Categorizing the Stressors</p>
<p> Instant Stressors.</p>
<p> These are the ones that evoke responses from our own self-defense system, and produce quick-acting, all-purpose cells that can attack many pathogens. This kind of stressor for a time boosts our natural immunity</p>
<p> Short-term Anxiety Stressors:</p>
<p> These are the type when going for a job application, performing in public, examinations and the like. These too, if are only short-termed, can boost our natural immunity. However, if these stressors draw themselves out (such a being in a trial or legal event), they will turn into negative stressors and suppress the immune system.</p>
<p> Traumatic Stressful events:</p>
<p> These are the anxiety of impending disaster (natural or economic), or serious illness of a loved one. These stresses greatly reduce one&#8217;s immune system, and even when the events are over, one can still suffer the effects of post-traumatic stress syndrome.</p>
<p> Killer Stressors. The Chronic Ones:</p>
<p> These are the long-term stressors that make one change their life and life-style. Good examples of these are being a refugee and changing countries forcibly, becoming a care-giver to a love one, or becoming one who needs a care-giver. All of these are stresses without end, and are called killer stressors, as they often result in illness due to the impaired and suppressed immune system.</p>
<p> Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome.</p>
<p> PTSS acts as real threat to one&#8217;s immune system. It is in illness in itself, and is based on a distant stressful event that has left the person changed. These people have suppressed immune systems generally.</p>
<p> The major point to remember here is that knowing what the killer stressors can do to our immune system and general health, we must learn then some form of stress management. Having so learned these techniques, we can minimize the negative effects stress can (and does) have on our immune systems.</p>
<p> There are many methods of stress management such as yoga, certain forms of modified martial arts, philosophical systems such as employment of the Konov Principle, and also the well-understood power of prayer, faith and religion. These all serve to limit or modify the effects of killer stressors</p>

<p>The American Diabetes Association encrouages diabetics tochoose soy as their main protein source. Soy is easily digested and would be better tolerated among diabetics with poor kidney functions.</p>
<p>More good news for soy research has also found that eating soy based foods lessens the progress of osteoporosis in women after menopause In addition,  the United States Food and Drug Administration FDA has approved the use of this soy related health claim on food labels: A daily diet containing 25g of soy protein htat is also low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce blood cholesterol level and the risk of heart disease.</p>

Apart fro mginseng berry, soy and psyllium husk, our meal choices can include more  phytochemical rich cactus, polysacharide rich mushrooms as well as antioxidant rich broccoli, asparagus and leafy vegetables</p>
<p>If you need to consume meat, choose fish instead of red meat. Studies have linked high consumption of red meat with cancers suchas breast and colorectal cancer as well as heart disease. For example red meat consumption has been said to give Singaporeans 2.2 times more risk of getting colorectal cancer. This is mainly because red meat is very high in saturated fats. Fish, in contrast, contains more heart healthy fat such as omega 3 fatty acids.</p>
<p>Many thnk that vegetarians rarely suffer from chronic diseases but this is not true. First, many vegetarians tend to choose the same types of fruits or vegetables without giving themselves more varied plant food diet. Second, many pre packaged vegetarian foods tend to be over processed, where valuable nutrients are destroyed. A vegetarian diet also tends to be rich in carbohydrates without sufficient phytochemicals, antioxidants and poly saccharides. It is therefore critical for a vegetarian to choose a diet rich in these diesease fighting nutrients. Supplementing a vegetarian diet with soy also provides phytochemicals and plant protein.</p>

<p>Researchers at the Harvard Medical School discovered that people who took daily breakfast were a third less likely to become obese than those who skipped this meal. This is because eating first thing in the morning is believed to help regulate appetite and enhance energy. Breakfast eaters are also less likely to be hungry throughout the day and hence, less likely to overeat.</p>
<p>Having breakfast is also believed to keep blood sugar in check &#8211; this prevents diabetes or high cholesterol, which in turn, prevents heart disease. The best benefits, say the researchers, comes from eating whole grain cerealsfor breakfast. Whole grain cereals are rich in fiber, which stabilizes blood sugar, curbs appetite and keeps the heart healthy.</p>
<p>However, it is still important to not overeat for breakfast as this burdens the digestive system and stops it from working optimally.</p>
<p>Nutritional Immunology urges that a healthy breakfast should be highly nutritious without burdening the immune and digestive systems. Nutrients such as phytochemicals and fiber are ideal. Eating ingredients such as ginseng berry, soy and psyllium husk in the morning supplies the body with an ideal amount of phytochemicals and fiber.</p>

<p>There are however, many misconceptions about plants. Although plants are natural, not all of them are safe or healthy enough to be consumed as a plant food.  For example, tobacco laves, coca leaf (the source of cocaine), hemp (the source of marijuana) and opium poppy (the souce of heroin and morphine) are unsafe natural ingredients.</p>
<p>Plants are, therefore, available in two varieties: plant foods or food herbs that do not give harmful side effects and medicinal plants or herbs, which can bring harm when formulated or used incorrectly.  Below are some examples of plants to avoid:</p>
<p>A. Caffeine</p>
<p>Caffeine-Rich Plants  Tea is a very popular beverage worldwide. But Camellia leaf, the ingredient most widely used in many types of commercial teas, contains 3.5% caffeine by weight &#8211; that is about 1 percent more caffeine than popular coffee beans. From a Nutritional Immunology perspective this makes tea leaves natural but unsafe.</p>
<p>Caffeine is consumed as a &#8220;pick-me-up&#8221; because of its stimulating effects on the nervous system But caffeine can cause undesirable side effects like anxiety, insomnia, irregular heartbeat, addictiveness, and even death in those with high blood pressure.  There are strong signs that caffeine raises cholesterol and leads to heart disease. As caffeine affects the liver and pancreatic function, it can lead to blood sugar imbalance and as a result, chronic fatigue. Caffeine can obstruct DNA repair &#8211; a process that can lead to cancer.</p>
<p>Ephedra</p>
<p>Ephedra is also known by its Chinese name, Ma Huang. It contains the active ingredient ephedrine, which is found in some diet pills. By claiming that ephedrine &#8221; enhances energy&#8221;and &#8220;burn calories the natural way&#8221;, weight loss pill makers mask the potentially deadly effects of this herb.  Clinical studies show that ephedra can cause heart attack, blood toxicity and bleeding stroke. THe US Federal Government has now banned the use of ephedra as a dietary supplement.</p>
<p>Guar Gum</p>
<p>Guar gum is  a weight loss ingredient that was banned in the 1990s. Guar gum is a complex sugar that swells when wet, creating a feeling of fullness when eaten. However, its side effects include frightening instances of stomach, throat and intestinal blockage.</p>
<p>White Willow Bark</p>
<p>White willow bark contains salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin. The FDA says that this herb is sometimes used in child medications that are labeled aspirin-free. White willow bark can induce internal bleeding in aspirin-sensitive adults. The National Council Against Health Fraud cautions that using white willow bark for childhood chicken pox or influenza can lead to Reye&#8217;s syndrome, a disease which affects all organs of the body, but most lethally the liver and the brain.</p>
