More often than not, a cough is an ordinary immune reflex. Just as sneezing ejects viruses from the nose, coughing ejects them from the lungs and throat. Coughing is also extremely effective in clearing irritations or obstructions in our airways.
Productive coughs can expel large amounts of phlegm or yellowish pus from our throat, helping us get rid of infectious substances. The American National Institutes of Health advise that productive coughing should not be suppressed by cough medications. And, indiscriminate use of cough medicine can lead to addiction!
However, experts advise that if the cough lasts for over two weeks or comes from a child, it should be checked by a health care professional.
