Suppressed Soldiers: A Weak Immune System

Our immune system also malfunctions when it is weak. As the immune system thrives on a healthy diet and good rest, poor nutrition and over stress can make us fall ill more easily.

A weak immune system leaves us prone to highly infectious disease like SARS, pneumonia, meningitis, hepatitis, influenza, tuberculosis and food poisoning. In 2001, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 10% of adults in the world had at least one incidence of flu and that between 200000 and 500000 US adults are annually hospitalized for pneumonia and 200000 hepatitis A infections are reported.

Food-borne ailments leading to diarrhea and vomiting affect about 76 million Americans, of which over 5000 die.

A weak immune system can also lead to cancer. Under normal conditions, our immune cells are constantly patrolling the body and killing mutated cells and cancer growth. The American National Cancer Institute explains that a weak immune system cannot quickly identify and destroy these cancer cells, causing an uncontrollable spread of cancer in the body.

In the US, one in every four deaths is due to cancer. Worldwide, over 7 million people died of cancer in 2000 and 10 million new cancer cases were reported. Examples of cancer include lung cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer, ovarian cancer and prostate cancer.
